Wisconsin defensive tackle Charles Perkins plans to enter transfer portal

MADISON — As the Wisconsin football team continues to strengthen its defensive line through the transfer portal, news came Jan. 8 that a key player for the team next season is scheduled to transfer.

6-foot-2, 323-pound defensive tackle Charles Perkins plans to enter the transfer portal. That’s what his agent relayed to CBS Sports, a report Perkins retweeted on his is X account.

The loss would be huge for the Badgers. Perkins, who will be a redshirt senior in the 2026 season, missed four games due to injury and had six tackles, including two stops, in eight games.

Although Perkins’ numbers weren’t great, he was one of the top performers in spring training. He and rising rookie Dylan Johnson are expected to be the top two returners on the defensive line.

Along with the announcement, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell provided an update on the roster for the upcoming season. This seemed to run counter to Perkins’ plans.

“I think everyone who is currently on our roster but not in the transfer portal has signed,” Fickell said on January 8.

Quality interior defensive linemen are in high demand. Wisconsin added two players this portal cycle: Buffalo’s Junior Poiser and West Virginia’s Hammond Russell, and could add more players at the position.
