Once considered a blocking role, tight end has become a key part of the passing game in recent years. From Shannon Sharpe and Tony Gonzalez to Travis Kelce and Brock Bowles, tight ends have shone in some of the best offenses in the league.

Over the past decade, more than 10 tight ends have had at least 100 catches in a season. League records were scrawled time and time again, with all kinds of talented pass catchers claiming the title of the league’s most prolific tight end.

Tight end has most receptions in a season

McBride now holds the record for most catches by a tight end in a season, surpassing Zach Ertz’s record of 116 catches in 2018. The Cardinals standout surpassed Ertz in the same number of games, although his final mark may be in a different stratosphere given the extra games.

Most receptions in a single season

While McBride holds the single-season record for catches by a tight end, he still has a long way to go if he wants to break the all-time mark. Michael Thomas is the player with the most tackles in a single season with 149 tackles.

Thomas is one of three players to have at least 140 catches in a season. Marvin Harrison achieved this feat in 2002. Cooper Kupp, meanwhile, accomplished that while earning Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2021.
