Because Christmas falls on a Thursday this year, holiday garbage collection schedules may change in some New Hanover County towns.
Here’s what to know.
wilmington
City offices will be closed December 24-26.
Recycling and trash customers who would normally be serviced on Thursday will have collections on Wednesday, December 24th. All services (trash, yard waste, recycling, bulky items) will run on Wednesdays. This will be Recycling Blue Week.
All bulky, metal and electronic appointments for December 24th, 26th or 29th must be scheduled by 4pm on December 23rd.
Real Christmas trees are collected on regular trash days and disposed of as yard waste. All lights, decorations and decorations must be removed.
Artificial trees are not yard waste and must be scheduled for bulky waste collection. Bulky trash collection will be scheduled for the next regular trash day. Customers must call or submit information online to schedule a large truck.
Plain and glossy wrapping paper without metal flakes, glitter, plastic coatings or special additives are recyclable. The following items are not recyclable and should be placed in the trash: foil or metal wrapping, plastic wrap or bubble wrap, Styrofoam or packaging “peanuts,” glitter or heavily laminated paper, ribbons, bows, and non-paper accessories.
RTS will collect overflow recycling on customer-designated collection days and adhere to the following guidelines: Cardboard must be broken down and stacked neatly next to the recycling cart; loose, clean recycling may be placed in cardboard boxes (which will be recycled) or personal containers up to 35 gallons.
As for the New Year’s Day schedule, city offices and the New Hanover County Landfill will be closed on Thursday, January 1. Thursday Recycling and Trash customers will have their trash collected on Wednesday, December 31st. All services (trash, yard waste, recycling, bulky items) will run on Wednesdays. This will be Recycling Green Week.
All bulky, metal and electronic appointments for December 31st or January 2nd must be scheduled by December 30th at 4pm.
carolina beach
A Carolina Beach Town employee said that as of Dec. 11, Carolina Beach had not received a holiday trash collection schedule from GFL Environmental.
Kure Beach
Kure Beach Town Administrator Mandy Sanders said there will be no changes to Kure Beach’s regular garbage collection schedule during the holidays.
During the first two weeks of January, the Public Works Department will collect abandoned Christmas trees for free. During this time, trees are asked to be left on property lines for pickup. The town said if any additional debris is left next to the tree, standard fees will be charged to remove it.
wrightsville beach
The town will not collect trash on Christmas Day, December 25, or New Year’s Day, January 1. Anyone scheduled for collection on Thursday or Friday will have their garbage collected on December 26th and January 2nd.
Christmas recycling may be dropped off at Wrightsville Public Works, 200 Parmela Blvd. December 29 to January 19. People are asked to throw trees into green containers in front of public works facilities.
