Kansas school district ends semester early amid rising sickness rates

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Students and staff in southern Kansas school districts are starting their break early, but unfortunately it’s due to a spate of illnesses.

Dexter USD 471 announced Monday that classes will be dismissed early for the semester due to the large number of students and faculty who are sick.

“We are experiencing a significant amount of illness right now and it appears to be spreading very quickly,” the district said on social media.

Nearly 3 million people have been infected with influenza. This is where the virus hits hardest

All scheduled end-of-semester activities, including extracurricular activities, will be postponed, canceled or rescheduled to a later date.

“Not only are we concerned about students and staff getting sick right now, we also don’t want the disease to continue to spread, ultimately resulting in students passing it on to their extended families (grandma and grandpa) over the holidays,” USD 471 said. “We appreciate your understanding as we work hard to keep our students, staff, and school community healthy. Thank you for your continued support of USD #471 Dexter Schools. Have a great holiday season and we look forward to seeing everyone get back to health.”

The second semester begins on January 5th.
