Expected snowfall totals as NYC issues weather alert for winter storm

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Office of Emergency Management placed the five boroughs under a weekend weather warning on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service warned that a fast-moving snowstorm is expected to hit the city starting around 10 p.m. Saturday and continuing into early Sunday.

New York City is expected to receive 2 to 3.5 inches of snow, with the heaviest accumulations in areas such as Staten Island, southern Brooklyn and southeastern Queens.

“While we are not anticipating major storms, we do expect that there will be accumulation of snow on roadways and sidewalks,” said NYCEM Commissioner Zach Iscol. “The first accumulation of snow can catch people off guard and create slippery conditions very quickly.”

The health department has begun pretreating roads with salt water and has more than 700 salt spreaders ready to deploy when the storm begins.

“All New York City agencies are ready for this system and we will continue to monitor the situation closely,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “New Yorkers should be prepared, too—avoid driving and give yourself extra time on public transportation if you do need to travel.”

In response to the storm, MTA crews were deployed to salt and clean surfaces throughout the system. Transport agencies have also assured that they are prepared to send debris and de-icing trains to ensure services continue without disruption due to weather conditions.

Bus service will be adjusted based on road conditions around the city, while Metro trains, the Long Island Rail Road and MetroNorth are expected to run as scheduled.

“We urge everyone to use caution when traveling, check on neighbors who may need assistance, and stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC,” Iscol said.
