A British mother has been sentenced to a mental hospital months after crawling into bed with her 4-year-old son and inexplicably stabbing him 11 times until he died.
Akanksha Adivarekar was sentenced Thursday for the June 10, 2025, death of her 4-year-old son, Agustya Hegishte. Her mother killed him in her sleep, drinking bleach in an apparent suicide before heading to a local hospital for life-saving surgery, while her son Agustya Hegishte was found stabbed to death at her home in Maidenhead, England.
Adivarekar, 37, a former medical consultant who calls herself an “influencer” online, was ordered to remain in hospital with restrictions under the country’s Mental Health Act, the BBC, Metro UK and Metro UK reported. bucks free press.
Thames Valley Police said in a press release on Thursday that Adivarekar first admitted his role in his son’s death at a hearing at Reading Crown Court last Wednesday (December 3). “Today’s sentencing brings to a conclusion a complex and challenging investigation,” Detective Inspector Rob Underhill said in a statement after Akanksha’s sentencing hearing.
During the hearing, both the judge and Adivarekar’s husband expressed hope that her mandatory hospitalization would help. Adivarekar’s husband, who was not named in court, became emotional during his testimony and said: “I lost my son, who was my everything and my wife,” Metro UK reported.
The husband reportedly said: “The pain of losing a loved one is indescribable. All I can do is forgive Adivarekar for what she has done. I hope she lives a good, respectful life after receiving treatment. This is true justice for me and my son.”
Metro UK reported that Judge Michael Grieve KC told Adivarekar: “You need treatment, not punishment.”
“The essence of this tragic case is that you will forever suffer horrific pain as a result of what you did,” the judge said, noting there had been “no welfare issues whatsoever” before the couple’s child was accidentally murdered in June.
The judge said there was “no reasonable motive for this offence,” Metro UK reported. “Prior to the manic episode, you and your son had a normal, loving relationship.”
According to prosecutors, Adivareka arrived at a local hospital wearing blood-soaked pajamas on the day her son was murdered and told staff she killed her son to “end his pain.” According to Metro UK, hospital staff described Adivareka as “delirious” when she arrived at the emergency room, and she later blamed her husband for her son’s death and drank bleach again at the hospital after undergoing life-saving surgery.
