49ers add former Patriots 4th-round pick to bolster depth at WR

The San Francisco 49ers brought in new internal depth at wide receiver.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday that former New England Patriots fourth-round pick Javon Baker will join the practice squad ahead of the San Francisco club’s Week 15 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Baker played in 11 games for the Patriots as a rookie last season and caught one of his four targets for 12 yards. He was waived by New England in late August before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. The Eagles released him in October, and he has since become a free agent.

The 49ers are unlikely to bring in Baker this year and hope he can help. It’s more likely they’ll let him get some practice in before the offseason, and then they could decide to bring him back to the offseason roster.

There is no word yet on corresponding roster changes.

Baker spent two fruitless years at the University of Alabama, catching nine passes for 116 yards and one touchdown. After two years with the Crimson Tide, he transferred to the University of Florida and had two successful years to end his college career. In 2022, he caught 56 passes for 796 yards and five touchdowns. The next year, he had 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns on 52 catches.
