49ers QB great John Brodie, former NFL MVP, dies at 90

Legendary 49ers quarterback John Brodie died on Friday at the age of 90, the team announced.

Brodie, a 49ers Hall of Famer and one of the most respected players in franchise history, spent his 17-year NFL career in San Francisco. He won the NFL MVP in 1970 and was selected to the Pro Bowl twice.

“The 49ers family is saddened by the passing of one of the greatest players in franchise history, John Brody,” 49ers owner John York said in a statement. “As a kid, my 49ers fandom began with watching John play quarterback on TV. He showed incredible commitment to his teammates and his support for the team never wavered after playing. John became a good friend of mine and will continue to serve as the 49ers’ favorite player.” He will always be remembered as an important part of our team’s history. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Sue and the entire Brody family.”

Brodie was drafted third overall in 1957 out of Stanford and played until 1973. He didn’t experience the team’s success like other legendary 49ers quarterbacks like Joe Montana and Steve Young, as the 49ers didn’t win their first Super Bowl until 1982. But Brody is highly respected by fans for his longevity, success and the fact that he was born and raised in the Bay Area.

Brodie finished his career with 31,548 passing yards, 214 touchdowns and 224 interceptions.
