The San Francisco 49ers signed quarterback Adrian Martinez to the practice squad. Martinez was recently cleared off waivers after being waived by the New York Jets. As the 49ers discover rookie Kurtis Rourke’s abilities, Martinez could play a role on Caleb Williams and Sam Darnold’s scouting staff in preparation for the final two games of the season.
The 49ers will likely face a mobile quarterback in the wild-card round, whether it’s Jalen Hurts or Baker Mayfield — barring a bye week. So, Martinez plays a role in training.

The 49ers also made two more selections, according to NFL trade lines. Defenders Iosua Opeta and Aiden Williams were introduced. Both players have played right back for their respective teams during the preseason.
The 49ers may bring in two offensive linemen for the game, with Spencer Burford’s knee and ankle “checking out fine,” according to Kyle Shanahan, but unable to practice. On Monday, Shanahan said Burford was expected to practice this week, but that could definitely change in a few days.
