At least three people were killed and three others were injured when the Spanish island of Tenerife was swept into the sea.
The Canary Islands Government Emergency Response Team (GES) said in a press release that just after 4pm local time on Sunday, December 7, authorities received an alert that several people had fallen into the water after being “startled by waves” in a natural pool on the cliffs of Los Gigantes.
Emergency services rescued one person from the water. GES confirmed that two other people died at the scene. The deceased included a 35-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman and a man of unknown age.

“The sea rescue helicopter rescued one person from the water and recovered one deceased person,” GES said.
“Beach rescuers used a motorboat to rescue a woman who was in cardiac arrest and brought her to the pier, where Canary Islands Emergency Services Center (SUC) personnel performed advanced resuscitation maneuvers until the cardiac arrest was reversed and the woman’s condition was stabilized before she was transferred by ambulance to a medical helicopter for air evacuation to hospital.”
Two people “came out of the water on their own” and were treated by SUC staff, GES said in a news release. One of them was later taken to hospital.
The injured survivors and victims have not yet been identified.
The SUC deployed a medical helicopter and five ambulances. GES, Sea Rescue, Tenerife firefighters, Beach Life Saving Service and the National Guard assisted them at the scene.
“GES helicopters carried out multiple aerial scans, while Marine Rescue and Tenerife firefighters checked offshore resources,” GES said.
