2 Fort Bragg soldiers, Sanford man killed in N.C. 87 head-on crash

Early Feb. 14, two soldiers from Fort Bragg and a man from Sanford were killed in a head-on collision on North Carolina Highway 87 near Sanford.

Romeo Mason Fleck, 22, originally from Harrisburg, Pa.; Charles Jackson, 21, from Fort Bragg; and William Underwood, 28, of Sanford, were both killed in the 3:36 a.m. crash near Sanford, State Highway Patrol troopers said. Marcus Bethea.

Bethea said Fleck was driving a 2022 Toyota Camry southbound on NC 87 when he crashed head-on into Underwood’s northbound 2015 Chevrolet Z-71 pickup truck. Jackson was in the back seat of the Camry.

Bethea said the Camry’s front-seat passenger, Aydrian Larusch, 20, also of Fort Bragg, suffered serious injuries. Underwood was the only passenger in the truck.

The crash occurred between Olivia Road and Broadway Road in Harnett County, closing the highway for several hours.

Fort Bragg did not immediately respond to a request for information.
