February 11, 2026 newsweek According to reports, severe winter weather is still affecting the United States, and five states including Alaska, Maine, Colorado, California and Wyoming have issued winter storm warnings. These parts of the country face heavy snowfall and strong winds, threatening dangerous driving conditions. These travel hazards are more severe in remote or higher areas of affected cities, rendering roads quickly impassable.

In addition to the winter storm warning, California also issued a high wind warning, KESQ News Channel 2 reported, citing the National Weather Service. Wind gusts of up to 70 mph are expected in the higher elevations of the San Bernardino County mountains. Additionally, the warning predicts similar wind conditions of 45 to 55 mph in Apple Valley and Lucerne Valley. Gusty winds are expected to knock down trees and power lines, potentially causing power outages while making travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

The National Weather Service also issued a separate winter storm warning today for California’s Sierra Nevada, including Wawona, Tuolumne Meadows, Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake. Forecasters expect up to 24 inches of snow, including what has already fallen, and wind gusts of up to 50 mph. The warning warns that traveling in the area during these conditions could be very dangerous, so they advise anyone who must travel to be prepared. “If you must travel, keep extra flashlights, food and water in your car for emergencies.”

Smart de-icing tips to protect your driveway and save money during heavy snowfall

Heavy snowfall in several states inevitably leads to icy driveways. An article in Men’s Journal offers practical advice on how to de-ice smarter, in many cases swapping out commercial rock salt products for beet juice. The advantages of this alternative are that natural options cost significantly less, are gentler on pets, and are less likely to crack your driveway. However, beet juice works best on lighter snow and ice accumulations. Therefore, thicker slippery patches may require manual removal or commercial de-icer. The article also reveals that a quick post-winter driveway inspection for anyone using rock salt can save homeowners hundreds or thousands of dollars.
