A Wichita man who allegedly worked as a gambler while working at the Kansas Star Casino in Malvern has been arrested and charged with illegal gambling, the Attorney General’s Office said.
Quoc Phu Lam, 47, of Wichita, was arrested last week after an investigation by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission found that he placed bets on behalf of others, a practice also known as proxy betting, in violation of Kansas law.
He faces two counts of commercial gambling, one count of unlawful placing of an agent’s bet, one count of attempted unlawful placing of an agent’s bet and one count of solicitation to commit commercial gambling. Court documents show that prosecutors allege that some of the crimes occurred between November 14, 2022, and September 23, 2023, and that other crimes occurred between August 4, 2023, and October 8, 2023, when he was working at a Sumner County casino.
“Investigators determined that Lam attempted to have colleagues and others place bets through him as an agent,” a news release from Attorney General Chris Kobach’s office said. “He also invited another employee to join his commercial gambling operations to assist in collecting funds from these bets.”
After his arrest, Lin posted a $25,000 bond. His case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Lauren Watson and he is due back in court on March 12, the release said.
