Texas A&M softball (3-0) kicked off the 2026 season in dominant fashion, rolling through the first two days of the Aggie Classic with three straight wins and a 26-2 scoring advantage. But the level of competition jumps up significantly on Saturday as the Aggies take on the top-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0).

This could be called a soft rebuilding year for A&M after losing several key contributors from the 2025 roster. With so many new faces and different overall skill sets, head coach Theresa Ford has made it clear: This team needs time to find a rhythm, figure out the pitching rotation and see which players stand out in several ongoing position battles. Few of the Aggies are playing the same position they were last season, and there could be some bumps in the schedule early on as the roster takes shape.

Texas Tech, meanwhile, comes into the game off the back of an appearance in the Women’s College World Series championship game. A roster gap exposed in the series against Texas led to an aggressive offseason overhaul that landed the Red Raiders with the No. 1 transfer class in the country. They’re off to an equally hot start in 2026, starting 3-0 and outscoring their opponents 36-6.

Saturday’s matchup is an early gauge for both programs – a Top 25 matchup on SEC Network+ that should provide a clearer picture of where each team stands. It’s still early February, but early ranked wins can build momentum and validate the work put in throughout the offseason.
