Many are historic, but not all have bragging rights.

Here are the various awards and honors from the Six Nations.

What is the Triple Crown?

The Triple Crown is contested by England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

If one of the teams beats the other three teams, they will win the Triple Crown.

Although not named as such at the time, the award was first awarded to England in 1883 at the first Home Nations Championship (the forerunner of the Six Nations).

Before 2006, there was no real trophy and it was called the “Invisible Cup”.

The most successful team in the Six Nations era (from 2000) was Ireland, with eight trebles.

Scotland have not won the Treble since the competition expanded to six teams in 2000 – they last did so in 1990.

Are France and Italy fighting for trophies?

Yes – the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy.

It is a relatively new member of the Six Nations – launched in 2007.

The trophy is named after an Italian general who was famous for his role in the unification of Italy.

Italy has only won the trophy twice, in 2011 and 2013.

What is a Grand Slam?

To win the Grand Slam, a team must win all five games in the Six Nations.

Ireland last achieved this feat in 2023.

While the Six Nations champions do not have to win a Grand Slam, any team that wins the Grand Slam will win the entire tournament.

That’s because of the Six Nations bonus points system, which awards an extra three points to teams that win all their games.

France and Wales are the countries that have won the most Grand Slams in the Six Nations era (four).

What is Calcutta Cup?

The Calcutta Cup is the oldest trophy in international rugby and is contested between England and Scotland.

As the name suggests, the cup originated in India at the end of the 19th century and was hosted by the Calcutta Rugby Club composed of British expatriates.

After the rugby club disbanded, the remaining members decided to melt down the club’s remaining funds and create a trophy out of rupees.

The trophy was subsequently awarded to the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

In 1879, England and Scotland competed for the Calcutta Cup for the first time.

In 1938, the BBC broadcast the Calcutta Cup, the first international rugby match to be broadcast live on television.

England have won 83 of 131 games so far, but Scotland have been dominant in recent years, winning four in a row before England’s 16-15 win at Twickenham in 2025.

Who “wins” the wooden spoon?

“Winning” a wooden spoon is not something to celebrate. And, no, there’s no actual spoon involved.

This metaphorical award goes to the team at the bottom of the standings.

The idea of awarding a “wooden spoon” is thought to date back to the University of Cambridge, which awards wooden spoons to students with the lowest grades in mathematics exams.

The term has been used in rugby since the late 19th century.

During the Six Nations era, only England and Ireland avoided the wooden spoon, with Italy “winning” the most.
