GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 196 in Georgetown Township have been reopened after deputies responded to several slides and crashes Friday night and early Saturday amid snowfall and cold temperatures.

I-196 in Georgetown Township was closed in both directions for a period of time Friday and early Saturday due to multiple weather-related crashes and slides, deputies said in a news release.

Among several other incidents, troopers responded to a crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 196 near mile marker 64. Authorities believe the 29-year-old Wyoming man lost control of his car after being struck by a white pickup truck that left the scene. The driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The lane was closed for about an hour while deputies cleared this and other incidents.

In unrelated incidents, two semitrailers slid off the highway, blocking the roadway and causing the Sheriff’s Office to close traffic lanes so crews could clear the wreckage.

Dozens of crashes and slides have been reported during winter weather conditions in West Michigan, and authorities are reminding drivers to use caution, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and be aware of rapidly changing road conditions, especially on bridges, ramps and low-traffic roads.

The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
