Trump says he’s rebuilding Dulles airport while his administration is fixing the ‘people movers’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration will move to rebuild Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia.

“We’re also going to rebuild Dulles Airport because it’s not a good airport,” Trump told a meeting of Cabinet members at the White House. “It should be a great airport, but it’s not a great airport at all. It’s a terrible airport.”

Dulles Airport is one of the three major airports in the Washington area, and its quality and availability are hot topics among Washingtonians.

Former real estate tycoon Trump said the Dulles Tower was good but “not designed correctly.” Still, he praised Eero Saarinen, the Finnish-American architect who designed Dulles Airport’s main terminal.

“We’re going to turn this around, we’re going to build Dulles Airport – serving Washington state, Virginia, Maryland and beyond – and we’re going to turn it into something really spectacular. We have an amazing plan for this.”

In early November, his motorcade drove through Dulles Terminal unannounced. At the time, the White House said Trump wanted to make a detour to the airport to evaluate potential future projects.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy added that the government is continuing efforts to repair Dulles Airport’s so-called “people movers,” which move passengers between concourses. One crashed in November.

Duffy said his agency will announce later Tuesday that it is seeking bids to repair the people movers, also known as “mobile lounges.”
