‘There’s Literally Nothing to Do’

A video posted on TikTok by a University of Mississippi student detailing why she left school has gone viral, and people are speaking out about the situation.

Maggie Recco, who originally transferred from Arizona State to the University of Mississippi and then went to the University of Miami, posted a video explaining why she left after one year at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Her grievances included a lack of dining and shopping options and what she found to be a false social scene.

“There’s really not much to do in Oxford,” Recco said in the video. “There’s no Target. The only grocery store is Walmart, and you don’t meet everyone you know there.”

She also complained about the lack of late-night dining options, saying the only places open after 10 p.m. were fast food restaurants, with drive-thru wait times of more than an hour.

She also complained about Oxford’s nightlife, saying many venues closed as early as 12.30pm and cover charges were high.

“You have to pay at least $20 to get into the bar,” she said in the video, adding, “And on game days, it’s much higher. One time, it was $200 to get into the bar.”

She told a story about her and her friends looking for a place to go at closing time.

“We got to this bar and they were charging $80 to get in and they closed in 30 minutes.”

She also complained about police activity in Oxford’s nightlife venues, saying they patrolled on horseback in uniform and plainclothes officers from the Liquor Control Unit regularly raided venues.

“The square was full of police,” she said in the video, adding, “Police on horseback were just walking around, actually looking for underage students.”

Traffic problems are another source of frustration. Although the Memphis airport is 1 hour and 20 minutes away, Recco said the cost of the ride-sharing service is too high. “If you take a taxi, it’s $150 to get to the airport,” she said.

Reko also complained that many of her classmates had a self-righteous attitude. “Everyone is a little fake, spoiled, and not used to rejection,” she said. “You might think because it’s a Southern school, but a lot of it has a false sense of hospitality.”

Parking tickets are another cause of frustration. “I got over $1,000 in tickets,” she said, adding that parking officers were happy to issue tickets. “They actually hate you.”

Reko concluded by describing her thoughts on the school. “This school is a summer camp for 19 to 23-year-olds,” she said. “This is not true. This is fake.”

Reko ended the video by saying she had been warned about the school. “They’re right,” she said. “Now I’m moving to Miami, so I’ll be in a city I love.”

The video prompted a variety of reactions, with some being supportive and others being very negative. One commenter said she didn’t make any friends and was having trouble adjusting to college. “Just no friends,” she said.

Another commenter questioned the public nature of the announcement. “This is your life decision,” the commenter wrote. “Log out of the app and start doing something important.”

A third commenter took a more cynical view of Reko’s educational path, which saw her go to three different schools, saying she had to take on a “hoe challenge.” This review also generated a lot of interest on the site.
