‘The View’ Erupts Into Yelling Match Over Greenland and Venezuela: ‘Ana, We’re on Television!’

Conflicts on “The View” aren’t as frequent as they used to be, but on Friday the ABC host got into an old-fashioned sparring match over Greenland and Venezuela. Eventually, host Joy Behar had to remind host Ana Navarro “We’re on TV!”

The debate became the first hot topic of the day, with the women discussing Republican anger over Trump’s renewed attempt to buy Greenland. Host Sonny Hostin wonders why these lawmakers are so staunchly opposed to buying Greenland but are okay with the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. She was quick to point out that Greenland is not for sale and compared the two situations.

“Venezuela is not ours and its oil is not ours,” Hostin said. “And yet, we went in, we took the president — I call it a kidnapping, because I believe that’s what happened — we took the Venezuelan head of state, we took the oil, and we put the money, I think, into offshore accounts. So how is that possible but not Greenland?”

At this point, Ana Navarro intervened, assuring Hostin that she loved her, but immediately retorted that there could be no equivalence between Greenland and Venezuela.

“Let’s look at some facts. Venezuela is a dictatorship, Greenland is not,” Navarro said. “Denmark is our ally, Greenland is our ally, we have military bases and operations in Greenland, Denmark is part of NATO like us, so we are part of a big alliance. Venezuela is where they kill, imprison and torture the opposition and suppress human rights.”

Navarro argued that “we would lose the point” if Greenland and Venezuela were treated equally, igniting Hostin’s anger.

“No, we don’t! The law is the law,” Hostin retorted. “What we’re doing in Venezuela is illegal, what we’re doing in Greenland is illegal.”

Navarro later reiterated her feelings from earlier in the week, saying the methods used can and should be questioned, but she was still celebrating with Venezuelans. She added that she did not believe the operation in Venezuela would succeed “unless every political prisoner is released and free and fair elections are held.”

Hostin then pressed her on whether Navarro thought the United States could take Venezuelan oil, prompting Navarro to retort that “Venezuelans think it’s OK because Maduro stole it!”

Since then, the women have argued over the legality of the move and whether legality matters, discussing it with each other and refusing to let anyone else weigh in — including moderator Alyssa Farah Griffin, who keeps trying. Eventually, Behar had to raise his voice.

“Wait! Anna, we’re on TV!” she yelled.

“I’m eight months pregnant, can we get a chance to talk? Like, what are we doing?” Farrah Griffin agreed.

The conversation got back on track, and from there it was easier to hear, and the women were able to finish the paragraph, although they still disagreed.
