No. 6 LSU women pull away after slow start to beat Arkansas 92-70

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Frauja Johnson and Mikaela Williams each scored 17 points and sixth-ranked LSU beat Arkansas 92-70 on Thursday night for its sixth straight Southeastern Conference win.

The Tigers (20-2, 6-2) led by just three points at halftime, while the Razorbacks (11-11, 0-7) lost all league games by double digits.

Johnson, Williams and backup Kate Koval helped LSU pull away after halftime. Koval scored 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

Grace Knox and Jada Richard each added 12 points for the Tigers, and Zakia Johnson added 11 points.

Taleyah Jones scored 23 points for the Razorbacks. Jenna Lawrence scored 12 points and Bonnie Deas and Maria Anais Rodriguez each had 11 points.

Arkansas did everything it could for LSU in the first half.

With 5 minutes and 43 seconds left in the first quarter, the Razorbacks made 6 of their first 9 shots, including 3 of 5 from three-point range, to lead 15-8.

Seconds later, LSU coach Kim Mulkey pulled all of her starters. The Tigers’ second team, led by Zakia Johnson and Koval, combined to score 12 points and went on a 14-7 run, tying the score at 22-22 after the first quarter.

Just two minutes into the second quarter, LSU sent out four starters. The Tigers built an eight-point lead with two minutes left, led by eight points from Williams on a series of mid-range jumpers.

At halftime, Arkansas recovered the score 36-33.

After missing 15 of 22 first-half attempts, LSU went on an 18-3 run in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter. The Tigers made 6 of their first 8 shots, including all three-pointers, to lead 54-36.
