Backstory
A broad area of high pressure is baking parts of the southern United States and northern Mexico this week. In Texas on Thursday, the state hit 100 degrees for the first time this year.

As of 4 p.m., the temperature in Laredo exceeded 100 degrees, breaking the previous record for the highest daily temperature of 98 degrees set in 2024. While it broke the daily record, it wasn’t the city’s earliest triple-digit temperature record. This distinction belongs to February 18, 1986.

As of 4 p.m., the number of infections in Zapata, another border town, was 103, as was Cotulla, north of Laredo. It was 100 degrees in Falfurrias, north of McAllen.
This time of year, average high temperatures in this part of Texas are in the mid-to-upper 70s.

Friday is expected to be cooler but still well above average. The high temperature in Laredo is expected to be near 90 degrees.
