WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — An 18-year-old was arrested after an hours-long standoff with police early Saturday morning, prompting an immediate SWAT team response.
Wichita police were dispatched to a home in the 2000 block of South Mosley Street around 12:45 p.m. after a relative reported their 18-year-old brother had attacked their 42-year-old stepmother with a rifle and threatened to shoot several other people at the home.
Police located the caller and the victim at separate locations and determined that the victim suffered an injury to the back of his head and required medical assistance.
While following the incident, witnesses told police the suspect threatened to “shoot to death” with police if they responded.
Upon arrival, police believed the suspect was located in the detached garage behind the home.

After multiple attempts to make contact with the suspect, SWAT teams and crisis negotiators were activated; however, he also refused to talk to them.
After police obtained search warrants for the garage and residence, SWAT used less lethal tactics and the suspect surrendered peacefully at 6:23 a.m.
The victim was treated at a local hospital and later released.
