SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Even though there was no snow or widespread power outages, Savannah was feeling the effects of the winter storm sweeping across the country. Dozens of flights at Savannah-Hilton Head Airport were canceled or delayed as airlines adjusted flight schedules due to severe weather conditions.

Airport officials urged passengers to check flight status before departure. When travelers walked into the airport on Monday morning, the first thing they saw was the information on the flight information display board. About half of the boards listed cancellations, delays and long waits.

While Savannah hasn’t been as severely impacted as some major airports, flights here are still affected by weather issues that extend far beyond coastal Georgia. That’s because many of Savannah’s flights rely on connections from larger hubs

As of Sunday evening, nearly 70 flights at Savannah Airport had been canceled in the past 24 hours, according to FlightAware. That’s no higher than last year’s rare January snowstorm, but it’s still significant disruption associated with this nationwide system.

When looking specifically at flights scheduled to depart Savannah, about 38 flights were canceled — about one-third of all departures — and several flights were delayed. Nationwide, the scale is much larger, with about 12,000 flights canceled and more than 18,000 delayed on Sunday alone.

The biggest trouble spots are the major hub airports that Savannah relies on, particularly Atlanta and Charlotte.

At Atlanta’s airport, more than 600 flights scheduled to depart there were canceled, making it the hardest-hit airport in the United States. Aviation Analysts Sirim It said the storm was the largest flight cancellation since the pandemic and that recovery could take days.

Airport officials recommend checking with your airline directly before departing for the airport and being prepared for last-minute changes.
