Liverpool smashed their transfer window record last summer.

Sporting director Richard Hughes oversaw spending worth £450m, including record-breaking British deals for Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.

Others – including Giovanni Leoni, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike – were recruited at huge expense.

But that doesn’t seem to be enough.

The Premier League champions’ defense has actually been pretty poor – at one stage of the season, they had lost six out of seven games.

Liverpool could sign five new players

It’s clear that Arne Slott’s side still need work, despite the money that was wasted last summer. The team has often appeared unbalanced this season, and injuries at key positions have indeed caused considerable losses.

Factor in the uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah (expected to leave next summer) and you can see why a raft of changes are coming.

A report from TEAMtalk claims the Reds could look to bring in up to five first-team players in the summer transfer window as Slott and Hughes try to arrest the team’s decline and get the Merseyside side back to their title-winning form.

Liverpool looking for defenders and midfielders

“Liverpool may consider signing four or five more key players at the end of the season,” the report states.

“Despite their decision not to get involved in the race to sign Marc Gheihy from Manchester City, they are still very keen to enter the centre-back market.

“There are also indications that the Reds will sign another right-back, left-back and a midfielder. They may even sign a new right-sided attacker if Mohamed Salah leaves.”

Liverpool linked with Alessandro Bastoni and more Micky van de Ven centre-back – Given the availability issues with Connor Bradley, right backs such as Van Desen, Marco Palestra, Givaro Reed or Alex Freeman could be considered.

The imminent departure of left-back Andy Robertson necessitates the need for a new deputy in Milos Kerkez, although a specific name has yet to emerge in that area.

Midfielders include Ayyoub Bouaddi, Eduardo Camavinga and Sandro Tonali is followed – And Jan Diomande looks to be the best candidate to replace Salah up front.
