Smith outlines MLS options
Smith, now in charge in Charlotte, admitted he made cautious inquiries during his Christmas visit to Villa Park. Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: “Obviously when I was there I put my feelers out. I was thinking about it and thought there was an opportunity here.”
“If he’s not going to play at Villa and can’t play elsewhere, then he has the option to come and play some games until the World Cup break.
“It would be a shame if he doesn’t play between now and the World Cup. There is a chance for him to play here if Liverpool or Villa want to.”

Our View – EPL Index Analysis
For Liverpool supporters, the situation is increasingly frustrating. Elliott remains a player of clear technical quality, but his loan spell hasn’t provided much rhythm or confidence. Five occurrences is not development, but edge. Watching his playing time tick away while decisions are delayed would do neither the player nor Liverpool any favors.

The MLS selection will be divisive. Some fans will worry that this represents a step away from the intensity of English football at a crucial age. Others will see logic in prioritizing time over prestige. Young players need competition, not good intentions. Sitting on a bench and not using it helps anyone.
There are also broader concerns about lending strategies. Liverpool sent Elliott to Villa believing the road was clear, but things soon changed. This miscalculation left Elliott exposed. Supporters hope the club will now take tighter control, whether that means sanctioning a short-term MLS transfer or recalling him to find a better fit.
The most important thing is clarity. Elliott needs to hit the ball regularly or his momentum will erode further. Talent alone is not enough. Opportunity, timing and decisive planning are equally important.
