Boston Red Sox fans are very familiar with New York Yankees’ 25-year-old right-hander Cam Schlittler. The Massachusetts native delivered a masterclass performance in the decisive Game 3 of last season’s ALWC, where the Yankees ended the Red Sox’ season. Schlitler is also known for interacting with Red Sox fans on social media.

The new MLB season is over, and Schlitler remains a serious threat in the American League East. He made his spring training debut on Friday and showed off a 99.4 fastball against the first batter of the day and struck out three pitches.

According to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Schlittler’s heater averaged 98.7 mph on the day, and Schlittler threw a total of 39 pitches.

The Yankees took it easy on Schlitler in training camp this spring as he battled back soreness, although he is expected to play in Week 1 of the season as scheduled and start with a 65-80 pitch count.

Joyce noted that Schlitler’s four-seam fastball — which doomed the Red Sox in October — wasn’t even his most notable pitch Friday.

“Probably the pitch that jumped out the most on Friday was Schlitler’s cutter, which he struck out two batters with,” Joyce wrote. “The top speed on the course was 96.5 mph and the average speed was 94.9 mph, which was significantly higher than last season’s average speed of 91.9 mph.”
