One of the victims had visible wounds to his head and cheek from being whipped with a gun, according to a criminal complaint. The man told police they were sitting in the store when Carl Hof and another man came in and demanded money.
Police said the victim recognized Hof because he was a regular customer. That person also said Hof pointed a gun at them and the second person hit them with the gun. The second man moved between the victim and another employee and repeatedly pointed the weapon at them while Hof took money from the safe, police said. The victim’s cell phone, credit card, wallet, keys and $230 in cash were also stolen. Unable to get into the till, the robber appeared to give up and leave. Police estimate $6,300 was stolen from the safe.
Police said the victims all mentioned Hof’s slurred and unusual speech, which allowed him to be identified during the incident. Hough was also identified through a photo, police said.
Court documents say Hof is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on felony charges of aggravated assault, robbery, theft by unlawful taking, carrying a firearm without a license and conspiracy.
There is no word yet on the second suspect.
