ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum believes Alabama has reached a crossroads and questions head coach Kalen DeBoer’s ability to quickly elevate the program after a rough patch on and off the field.

Finebaum called the situation a “turning point” after Alabama had a frustrating weekend in the transfer portal, losing multiple high-profile targets to an SEC rival.
Former Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman chose Texas, while running back Hollywood Smothers passed on his commitment to the Longhorns. Both turnovers were particularly painful for a team in need of help in the backcourt. It also provides Archie Manning and additional playmakers.
Finebaum, during a morning appearance with McElroy and Kubilik, said the losses highlighted an unfamiliar reality for the Crimson Tide in the post-Nick Saban era. “It’s hard to accept that Alabama was outplayed both in strategy and outlay,” Finebaum said. He added that some of the recent moves have “really knocked a lot of people over the edge.”

Alabama ran out of steam in the transfer portal with double-digit losses. The lack of changes raises questions about the balance of the roster heading into the 2026 season. Finebaum also said Alabama’s recent CFP quarterfinal loss to Indiana in the Rose Bowl was the program’s worst loss in the modern era.

“I think the real question for Alabama is what can it do?” Finebaum said.
DeBoer must inspire a wavering fan base, but that won’t be easy to do. Whether he can do that remains uncertain, but it could put him in trouble.
