UNC freshman star Caleb Wilson has died from a broken left hand, but it’s unclear how long he will miss.
The school announced the nature of Wilson’s injury on Thursday, two days after the 11th-ranked Tar Heels lost to Miami. With NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday about a month away, this could be a huge blow for UNC, where the 6-foot-10 forward is viewed as a high-end prospect in the NBA while leading the team in scoring (19.8) and rebounding (9.4).

Wilson exited the Miami game heading to the tunnel, then returned to the game with tape on his left wrist and palm area, finishing with a season-low 12 points.
X-rays taken during the game came back negative for a fracture, the program said in a release. But additional imaging after the team returned to Chapel Hill revealed a fracture, and the evaluation process is ongoing to determine a timetable for his return.
Wilson, who is from Atlanta, ranks sixth in the nation in scoring among freshmen.
