Nintendo Switch 2 Supports USB Input, Koei Tecmo Confirms in Gameplay Video

The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons have received some upgrades, most notably mouse functionality, which brings new ways to play select games on the hybrid console. Developers have now confirmed that the Switch 2 will also support USB mice. Koei Tecmo shared gameplay of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 last week and showed off the USB mouse input in the game.

Switch 2 gets USB mouse support

In nearly 17 minutes of gameplay for the grand strategy game Switch 2, game director and producer Michi Ryu used Joy-Con 2 controllers, first using both Joy-Cons for controller input and then switching the right Joy-Con for mouse input. Ryu presses the SL button on the Joy-Con, and a message will pop up in the upper left corner of the screen to confirm that the control mode has been switched to mouse operation. The user can switch back to the controller input by pressing the SL or SR button again.

“The mouse cursor appears and you can play like a normal mouse,” Ryu said while showing off the Joy-Con 2’s mouse operations. “The functions are the same as the already released Steam version, with left-click, right-click, and wheel operations.”

Later in the video, Ryu connects a USB mouse to the Switch 2 and continues seamless playback. After connecting the mouse, a confirmation message pops up again in the upper left corner of the screen. “Once the USB mouse is connected, it takes priority over the Joy-Con 2,” Ryu said. Players can also use Joy-Con and a USB mouse at the same time for controller operations.

The full version of “Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening” bundles the original game released in 2022 and all post-release DLC, and will be released on the first day of the Switch 2 launch on June 5. The game will also be released on PS5.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is also confirmed to support text-to-speech and live subtitles in GameChat. The hybrid console may also get USB keyboard support. It’s worth noting that the original Nintendo Switch also supported USB mice and keyboards. With the Switch 2, however, mouse input will play a bigger role since the feature is native to the new Joy-Con.
