Newcastle United vs Everton Player Ratings: The Toffees script yet another monumental win on the road

Everton recorded another landmark away win, beating Newcastle United 3-2 at St James’ Park.

The Toffees showed remarkable resilience to score the go-ahead goal shortly after the Magpies equalized twice in an exciting game.

Jarrad Branthwaite, Berto and Tierno Barry scored for the Blues, while Jordan Pickford made one of his late saves of the season to seal the three points for David Moyes’ side.

Everton dominated the first half, with Branthwaite giving the visitors the lead from a corner kick. Although Newcastle equalized through Jacob Ramsey, Berto secured the advantage again two minutes later by capitalizing on a Nick Pope error.

Berto hit the crossbar in a one-on-one chance in the second half and the home side dragged themselves back into the game with another equalizer eight minutes from time, this time through Jacob Murphy.

However, they were only tied for less than a minute, with Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall producing fine counter-attacks after regaining possession high up the pitch, before Barry finished.

The Toffees have responded impressively to consecutive defeats at home and after this win they sit eighth in the league with 40 points.

Here are the player ratings from Everton’s 3-2 win over Newcastle:

Jordan Pickford: 9

The Everton goalkeeper made one save of the season to deny Newcastle a late equaliser. His outstretched hand managed to hit the crossbar after Sandro Tonali’s powerful late shot. There was little Pickford could do about the two equalizers as both attempts unfortunately deflected in the direction of Branthwaite and Garner before finding the back of the net.

advertise

Jack O’Brien: 6

O’Brien returned to the lineup after serving a one-match suspension against Manchester United and was mainly involved at the back. He was on the right against Joelinton.

James Tarkovsky: 7.5

Tarkoski made several decisive defensive moves as Newcastle broke through, cutting off passing lanes and blocking Elanga’s passing attempts. He also fired the ball away after Pickford failed to quite cope with the visitors’ shot.

Jarrad Branthwaite: 8

Branthwaite scored the first goal with a perfect diagonal header towards the far post to give his side the lead. He also produced a brilliant diving header on the hour mark, collecting the ball from Anthony Gordon and completing a crucial interception. Unfortunately, after blocking Jacob Ramsey’s shot with his body, the ball deflected into his own goal.

Vitaliy Mykolenko: 7

Mykolenko returned to the starting lineup and the defense performed cleanly. Cleared multiple corners and was busy keeping the speedy Anthony Elanga quiet.

Idrissa Gay: 8

The veteran midfielder’s form has dipped since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, but he put in a fine game at the heart of the engine room. He was running for the entire 90 minutes but was unlucky to score Newcastle’s second goal. Gueye made up for it with a third goal as he led the press back to regain possession, along with Ndiaye.

James Garner: 7.5

It was his wonderful corner kick pass that helped the team score the first goal. Garner kept the tempo of the game in the midfield and built up toughness while covering the backline to protect the team’s late lead.

advertise

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (replaced by Michael Keane at 89′): 8

Dewsbury-Hall led many Everton counter-attacks with his dynamic movement and combinations. He delivered the winning goal for Barry with a perfect low cross.

Dwight McNeil (replaced by Harrison Armstrong at 81′): 6

McNeil tested Nick Pope on the edge of the area and Beto scored after the Newcastle goalkeeper passed the ball in his direction. He also tracked back regularly and made defensive contributions.

Iliman Ndiaye: 8.5

N’Diaye was once again at his best and was at the heart of Everton’s first-half dominance. He communicates brilliantly with his compatriots and approaches the penalty area with his runs and dribbling.

advertise

He also led a fine counter-attack in the first half, but his pass to Dewsbury Hall was disappointing. N’Diaye also played an important role in Everton’s third goal, regaining possession high up the pitch and setting up Dewsbury Hall, who set up Barry’s winner.

Beto (replaced by Tierno Bari at 74′): 7

Beto, making his first start for a long time, showed a striker’s instinct to capitalize on Newcastle’s mistakes and put his side ahead shortly after the home side’s first-half equalizer.

He also couldn’t believe how he scored after a tussle with Thio, only to hit the crossbar while one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Substitute

Tierno Bari: 8

Coming off the bench, he was in the right place at the right time to score his team’s winning goal.

Harrison Armstrong: 6

Finally made a cameo on the bench.

Michael Keane: N/A

Wonder how we could do this on the road. Maybe we should spend half a billion on players and play every game away!

Seriously though…after complaining about selecting O’Brien and McNeil at right guard, are some going to give the front office and coaching staff credit? I doubt it.

I spent much of the second half wondering if McNeil had gotten lost in the bathroom at halftime. But in a game where our ‘useless’ centre-forwards both scored and our right-back kept £40m worth of Everton refusing to be silent, I just wanted to go out and drink some winning beers.

On different points of view. My 25-year-old son has never seen Neville Southall play. He thought Jordan had to be the best player we ever had. Oh, the innocence of youth. Maybe in the next few years, with some trophies on the horizon, there could be a valid debate.

bill,

That’s the problem. Why can’t we copy the home format to the away format?

I’m not a big fan of this xG shit statistic, but, I did see something last week that suggests all this shit statistic is better at home! Solve this problem!

Regardless, there’s no point in beating the likes of Newcastle away from home if we can’t do business at home.

Burnley were unlucky today and are fighting for survival. Of course, God, we can do it next week.

If Jordan only scores 8 points after making a save that gave us 3 points instead of 1 this season, he’s never going to score 9 or 10 points. You yourself said he had no chance on any of their deflected goals.

Also harshly gave Barry a higher rating than Beto. Their big Oaks Byrne would knock Barry out midfield next week within 10 minutes of kick-off; Berto took everything he had and didn’t hold back.

How does Anthony Gordon’s run grade after being fouled? He’s probably still fucking on his way to Manchester right now.

IMHO, these ratings are a little crazy.

How on earth could Barry, who came on after 74 minutes and scored with his butt, get the same rating as Jordan, who instead of making “one of the saves of the season” made one of the greatest saves in the Premier League of the past decade.

How on earth did Pickford get the same rating as Branthwaite, Gay and Dewsbury-Hall, 0.5 higher than Tarkovsky and Garner, and 0.5 lower than N’Diaye, who is yet to return to “his most glorious best”?

Once in a lifetime we see something so special and world class amazing on the pitch and we saw that today. Pickford scored no less than 10 points for that stunning save alone, which will be replayed over and over again. indefinitely.

PG, a little harsh on Norberto?

He’s aggressive, physical, quick, makes things difficult for the guy Bourne, and he’s alert about his goals.

He will never be better than this, but he does impact the game.

Never commented on player ratings before as I think they’re pretty stupid, but a save like Jordan Pickford’s today earned us 3 points.

Paul (10), I thought was a little harsh on Dwight.

If you look closely at Beto’s goal, you’ll see that it was not only created by McNeil’s turn shot, he actually knocked the ball down from Gueye’s (?) through pass with superb skill and then passed the ball to Beto, who passed the ball back to McNeil, allowing Pope to leak the shot.

He’s slow, but otherwise covers a lot of ground and presses well. 6.5 for me.

Thought Beto had a great first half. Won the physical battle with the Newcastle centre-backs, controlled the ball very well and scored the goals he deserved. It understandably lost steam in the second half.

Did anyone else notice Garner’s reaction to Branthwaite’s corner kick?

As soon as the ball was in, he turned to the man wrestling him at the end of the gallows and gave him a big grin. No covering his ears or wiping his eyes like Nunez used to do, just a fucking smile.

Sitting here eating my chicken and mushroom pie…and soon some humble pie.

I’ve lambasted Moyes for his selections recently but, to his credit, he got it right yesterday. McNeil plays, I don’t know if it’s just me but I’m always looking forward to his next performance. But in fairness to him, he made the switch. His shot and Beto’s follow-up were a welcome boost for both of them. Even Barry got his target out of his ass.

I would like to see George get some minutes against Burnley and have Patterson at right-back and O’Brien and Branthwaite at our centre-backs.

advertise

What do you want to say about Pickford? I’m not his biggest fan, but yesterday’s save was a fantastic effort…but, as someone said before, didn’t he catch it? Fair dues Jordan. As a former goalkeeper, I like to dominate the six-yard area, but I’m taller than Pickford.

Now, Davey lad, stop messing around with your team selection against Burnley. Please give it 3 points…and tell Barry to fuck off.

No need for humble pie Sean mate (21). Hope all is well with you. We moved from one game to the next and there were too many games where you had the right to criticize Moyes’ choices and our performance. Fortunately, there are days like yesterday when you do exactly the right thing: you praise Moyes. The only thing that was inconsistent was our performance. Hopefully you’ll be praising Moyes on Tuesday.
