New iPhone Update With Surprise Major Change Is Just Hours Away

When Apple releases iOS 26.4 for iPhone, likely in the next 48 hours or so (you can read the full details here), it will include a shift in device behavior that many users will find completely surprising. In a significant but welcome change compared to the previous policy, Stolen Device Protection will be turned on by default for the first time.

What is Stolen Device Protection?

Stolen device protection is a key element of iPhone, launching in early 2024. Until now, it’s been an opt-in feature designed to help ensure that if your iPhone is stolen while it’s unlocked, the thief can’t immediately replace your biometrics with their own (such as Face ID or Touch ID) and then access banking apps and the like.

This change means that after updating, your iPhone will immediately require Face ID or Touch ID to access sensitive data, such as saved passwords or credit card information. If the biometric scan fails initially, the password cannot be entered.

This is a significant change and one that many people, myself included, have wanted for a long time. I’ve been asking all my friends to check if they have protection turned on. I don’t have to do this anymore.

Passwords have been the last resort for iPhone users for years. If Face ID doesn’t work (say because you’re wearing a mask), you can simply enter the code.

Now, when you leave a familiar location designated by Apple, such as home or work, the passcode option is removed for high-security operations. This prevents thieves from taking over your digital life after seeing your password, but it could catch legitimate users off guard the first time they try to check their password at a coffee shop.

iOS 26.4 release date

Things are subject to change, but since the release candidate arrives on Wednesday, March 18th, the general release will almost certainly be released by Wednesday, March 25th. My best guess is that it will be released on Monday, March 23rd.

The update is compatible with all iPhones from iPhone 11 and above, including the latest iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 17e and iPhone Air.
