Millbury police officer wounded, barricaded suspect killed in shootout at Spencer shopping plaza

A Millbury police officer is recovering after being wounded by a trapped suspect during a shootout at Spencer Malls on Tuesday night.

The Worcester District Attorney’s Office said the suspect shot another person early Tuesday night and then led police to the Big Y Plaza on West Main Street.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, Spencer police were called to a multifamily home on Main Street just after 5 p.m. When they got there, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Twelve minutes later, a person matching the suspect’s description was spotted near West Main Street.

When officers approached the suspect, he shot them and then ran into the Family Dollar store, the District Attorney’s Office said. Officials quickly evacuated the store.

The CEMLEC SWAT team found the suspect hiding in a bathroom behind the store.

“The suspect fired at officers, injuring a Millbury police officer who was a member of the CEMLEC SWAT team,” said Senior First Assistant District Attorney Jeff Travers. “The officer is reportedly in stable condition.”

The district attorney’s office said officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

“I want to assure Spencer residents that this was an isolated, targeted incident,” said Spencer Police Chief Michael Byford. “There is no danger to our community.”

Officials have not released an update on the condition of the victims in the initial shooting. So far, police have not released the names of those involved.

The public is urged to stay away from popular squares during the massive emergency response.

The investigation is ongoing.
