Marvel’s Wolverine Will Reportedly Get a New Trailer at Sony’s Next State of Play Event This Month

Sony is reportedly preparing to finally share updates for Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games’ next PS5 superhero action-adventure game. The PlayStation parent company hasn’t showcased the game since it was announced at the PlayStation Showcase in 2021, but a new announcement is reportedly imminent. Insomniac may show off a new trailer for “The Wolverine” as early as the next episode of State of Play in late September.

New trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine is ready

Insider Gaming reported on Wednesday that the company plans to hold its next State of Play conference at the end of September, citing sources familiar with Sony’s plans. According to different sources, Insomniac Games will “almost certainly” be attending the event. Production on the next trailer for The Wolverine is said to have been completed and new footage is ready for release.

If the new trailer doesn’t appear during the planned State of Play livestream later this month, it will “undoubtedly” be shared in the coming months – likely at the 2025 Game Awards in December, according to reports.

Wolverine’s development in trouble

Marvel’s Wolverine has had a troubled development cycle, largely due to a 2023 ransomware attack that leaked a wealth of material from the game, including early builds of gameplay footage, concept art, storyboards, plot, a bootable version of the game, and more. The hack also resulted in the leak of private data from Insomniac employees, internal emails, presentations, and a slew of unannounced games planned by the studio.

The ransomware attack, which comes just months after Insomniac Games launched Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5, has clearly impacted Wolverine’s development, although the studio has yet to reveal details about its plans for the game or whether those plans have changed. Insomniac has been radio silent since announcing The Wolverine in 2021, fueling speculation about the future of the project. However, the latest information suggests that Marvel’s Wolverine is still alive and well in Insomniac, and may be ready to finally show off his claws.

Insomniac’s leadership shake-up

The aftermath of the attack wasn’t all plain sailing for Insomniac and Wolverine. In February 2024, just months after the hack, Sony laid off 900 people at PlayStation, leading to layoffs at the developers of Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank.

Later that year, there was a change in Wolverine leadership at Insomniac. Brian Horton, who was confirmed as the game’s creative director when it launched in 2021, has reportedly left the studio to join Xbox’s Perfect Dark reboot in the same role. The game has now been canceled by Microsoft. Sony confirmed it has replaced Horton as creative director with Marcus Smith.

Additionally, Mike Daly has reportedly replaced Cameron Christian as Wolverine’s game director. Sony didn’t specify the reason for the leadership shake-up at the time, but the change was said to stem from creative decisions surrounding Wolverine. Christian is reportedly still at Insomniac Games in a different role.

Officially, Sony has revealed little about Marvel’s Wolverine, other than to say it’s in development for PS5. The company has yet to share the game’s gameplay or release window. The brief CG trailer shown at PlayStation Showcase 2021 remains the only official footage of the game.
