GTA 6 Delay Led to Celebrations at Sucker Punch, Ghost of Yotei Director Says

Ghost of Yotei developer Sucker Punch was relieved when Rockstar Games delayed Grand Theft Auto 6 to 2026, its creative director revealed in a new interview. GTA 6 was originally slated for a fall 2025 release, which likely left little breathing room for Sony’s next triple-A PS5 exclusive. “Ghost of Tsushima” is the sequel to 2020’s “Ghost of Tsushima” and will be released on October 2.

In a quick interview with MinnMax, Nate Fox, creative director of Sucker Punch, humorously said that the delay of GTA 6 is something Sucker Punch deserves to celebrate.

When asked if the team was celebrating the postponement of GTA 6 to 2026, Fox joked in response: “We’re not even drunk yet. Months of hangovers. It was a great day!” Fox said.

GTA 6 delayed rescue

Before delaying GTA 6, Rockstar Games had not confirmed a release date for the game, but it was expected to be released in the fall of 2025. Rockstar parent company Take-Two has repeatedly promised this release window. According to reports, many publishers and developers have been waiting for Rockstar to announce the release date of GTA 6 before confirming the release date of their own upcoming games.

Sucker Punch announced an October 2 release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 in April, just days before Rockstar announced it was delaying Grand Theft Auto 6 to 2026. So, as you can imagine, this news must come as a relief to Sony – after all, no game developer would want their game to be released anywhere close to GTA 6, which is sure to attract all the media attention, internet buzz, and gaming time upon release.

GTA 6 is now set to release on May 26, 2026, and it’s safe to say that there won’t be any major game releases around the same time.

Yotei Ghost tells the story of new protagonist Atsu, who embarks on a path of revenge years after her family was murdered by the notorious outlaws the Yotei Six. The game is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei in Ezo in northern Japan in the 1600s, drawing inspiration from samurai films.

As Atsu, players will hunt down their target with the help of clues that are slowly revealed through exploration during the game. Atsu will also accept bounties, meet and befriend allies, cook, craft, and participate in tons of side activities. “Soul of the Goat” will be released on PS5 on October 2.
