Marner scores 2 as Golden Knights get 5 in 1st period and beat Sharks 7-2

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Mitch Marner scored twice, Reilly Smith had a goal and an assist and the Vegas Golden Knights tied a franchise record with five first-period goals and beat the San Jose Sharks 7-2 on Tuesday night.

Mark Stone also had a goal and an assist, and Brett Howden, Colton Sissons and Tomas Hertl also scored for Vegas. Pavel Dorofeev, Kaden Kozak, Brayden Bowman and Ivan Barbashev each had two assists, and Carter Hart made 21 saves to help the Golden Knights snap a three-game losing streak (0-2-1).

Maclin Celebrini and Colin Graff scored and Tyler Toffoli had two assists for San Jose, which lost its third straight game. Yaroslav Askarov allowed four goals on 16 shots but was tied with 5:03 left in the first period. Alex Nedelkovic finished with seven saves the rest of the way.

The Golden Knights set a season-high in points scored and three times surpassed their previous high of six set in October.

The five goals tied the Golden Knights’ franchise record for a stretch for the first time, having accomplished the feat four times before. Vegas had 13 players score at least one point during the period, three times breaking the previous record of 11 players.

Howden and Bowman scored two-on-one to help Vegas take the lead 1 minute and 46 seconds into the game.

Marner made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 9:07, setting up a cross-ice pass for Dorofeyev that looped around Sharks center Alexander Wennberg and past Askarov.

Sissons scored on a 2-on-1 with Keegan Kolesar with 8:23 left in the first period. Kolesar sent a backhand pass past sliding defender Mario Ferraro and then padded the pass from Askarov’s left side to Sissons, who caught the ball on the right side and scored.

Hertel shot from inside the right circle with 5:03 left in the game, leading by four goals in this quarter, chasing Askarov. Stone ended the important start with a backhand shot from the left past Nedelkovic with 1:26 left.

Celebrini scored for San Jose with 6:49 left in the second period, the 19-year-old’s 19th game of the season.

Smith made it 6-1 with 1:10 left in midfield, and Marner’s second goal gave the team a six-goal lead with 5:22 left in the third quarter.
