A Georgia woman was mourning the loss of her husband after her friend allegedly shot him in her car while she looked on, authorities said.

On Friday, March 13, at approximately 8:22 p.m., officers with the Waycross Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting near the intersection of Snelson Street and Old Brunel Street, where they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, WPD said in a news release.

The victim was identified as Jacob Garrett Cothern, 35, of Waycross, police said.

A short time later, officers encountered another man, Brandon Dale Frick, 29, of Waycross, who was armed and trying to flee, WPD said in a news release.

Police arrested Frick and took him into custody.

He was charged with malice murder, two felony counts of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission or attempt of a crime, and a misdemeanor count of unauthorized discharge of a firearm within 50 yards of a highway, according to online jail records.

Cothern’s wife, Buffy Cothern, told First Coast News that the shooting allegedly occurred Friday night when she and her husband, whom she married in 2024, were giving Frick a ride.

She claimed that her husband’s childhood friend Flick touched her arm inappropriately while they were driving.

She told the outlet she parked her car on Snelson Street, just outside Holy Way Church in Conyers, and her husband asked Frick to get out of the car.

He said they would not drive Frick home because of his alleged disrespect for his wife.

Seconds later, she claimed, “Brandon pulled out a gun and shot Jacob and when I saw my husband…”

“He fell to the ground and Brandon told him, ‘Stand up and take me home.'”

Cothern raised his hands and begged his friend, “No, Brandon, please stop. We don’t have to do this,” Buffy claimed.

“When he realized Jacob couldn’t get up,” she continued, “he shot him again, then nonchalantly put the gun back and walked away. Like without any remorse.”

Frick remains in jail awaiting his next court date.

It was unclear whether he had retained an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
