Real Madrid offer opportunity to sign Wirtz
Meanwhile, Wirtz fared slightly better.
The 22-year-old German has occasionally excelled in Arne Slott’s side but his form is still a long way from convincing Liverpool to pay up to £116m for him.

Although Slaughter committed to Wirtz as the starting playmaker, Wirtz has been moved to an attacking position. As well as being a No 10, he has also been tried on the left wing – but Liverpool are still waiting for a goal or a Premier League assist from their new attacking star.
Meanwhile, Spanish media are excited about the prospect of Real Madrid signing Wirtz, with reports suggesting Liverpool have already given up on him.
LFC willing to accept €110 million for Wirtz
This is clearly wishful thinking – Wirtz agreed to a five-year contract at Anfield. But the defensive center still claims the Reds are willing to accept a transfer fee of €110 million for Wirtz – having paid around €137 million for him last summer.

“English clubs paid $150 million for Wirtz last summer, but now they have left the door open for his departure,” the report said.
“In fact, they are reportedly willing to lower the asking price and sell him for $110 million.”

Wirtz must improve
The reason why Real Madrid are so interested is that Xabi Alonso is the man who is going to get the best out of Wirtz at Leverkusen.
The pair won the 2023/24 Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double together during a remarkable unbeaten season.
In fact, Real Madrid were strong contenders to sign Wirtz before he joined Liverpool – with Arne Slott eventually convincing the playmaker that his future lay on Merseyside.

The chances of the Reds giving up on Wirtz so soon after signing are slim – but we have to admit he hasn’t lived up to expectations just yet. Slaughter needs to get the most out of Wirtz, and fast, or problems will really start to arise.
