Historically, NC State’s matchup with VCU doesn’t seem entirely convincing. However, this game is by no means an automatic win for the ACC juggernaut.

North Carolina will be without star freshman Caleb Wilson, who is out for the season with a thumb injury. The Tar Heels are 5-3 since losing Wilson and 2-4 against tournament-qualifying teams during the same span. “Our team is going to move forward,” UNC head coach Hubert Davis said after Wilson’s injury.
VCU, on the other hand, is a story of contrasts. The Rams are 16-1 over their last 17 games. Despite being seeded, VCU posed a threat to UNC in the first round. VCU has relied heavily on their defense over the past two months. Hold opponents below their expected average.
While UNC will need to rely on Henry Vissar and Seth Trimble to fill the void lost by Wilson, VCU does have Jadrien Tracy. Tracey, a transfer from Oregon State, went in the second round. Tracey has more tournament experience than anyone else on VCU’s roster.
Both teams should play with energy and intent. However, if VCU can hold UNC to a reasonable amount of possession down the stretch, this game could be decided in the final minutes. In the first round, a close final score was all the team could ask for. Like High Point against Wisconsin earlier today, if you trail, you have a chance to pull off an upset.
