The 2028 U.S. presidential election is already generating a lot of speculation. It’s sure to be a free-for-all as both sides struggle to find leading candidates. Vice President Vance is considered the favorite for the Republican nomination, but a recent poll suggests he could face stiff competition if he runs against a popular Democrat.
Poll shows AOC ahead of Vance in hypothetical 2028 presidential matchup
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leads Vice President J.D. Vance by two points in a hypothetical 2028 presidential race, according to a new poll from The Argument/Verasight. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.7%, so the two candidates would be neck-and-neck in a true race.
However, despite Ocasio-Cortez’s popularity in this poll, she would face stiff competition if she ran in the 2028 Democratic primary. In the most recent Yale Youth Poll, she trailed California Gov. Gavin Newsom, 2024 Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
While these early polls suggest the 2028 race will be tight, no major candidate has yet been confirmed. Neither AOC nor Vance has committed to running for president, and a lot can happen in three years. American politics is extremely unstable, and stars rise and fall in the blink of an eye. Vance’s potential depends largely on the success of the Trump administration, which continues to face scrutiny over immigration and economic woes. AOC’s success as a candidate, on the other hand, depends on the opposite.
It looks like 2028 will be a wild card election. Republican sentiment is wavering, but Democrats have yet to find a center of unity. If Trump endorses Vance, we might see him emerge victorious based on sheer inertia. However, it’s too early to know for sure what will happen, and polls in the coming years should be taken with a grain of salt.
