Senator Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media on Saturday that Senate Democrats should “activate the National Guard” in response to the second shooting of an American citizen by ICE agents in Minneapolis. AOC is one of dozens of political voices calling for a stronger response to the city’s ongoing immigration actions.
“Americans are being killed in the streets by their government. Our Constitution is being torn to pieces and our rights are disappearing. Resist,” she wrote. “Senate Democrats should block ICE funding this week. Activate the National Guard. We can and must stop this.”
“Governor, you have the Minnesota National Guard. Deploy them. Arrest ICE agents. Enforce the law and protect your people from Trump terrorists,” Keith Olbermann wrote in a reply to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Saturday.
(Walz wrote Saturday morning, “I just spoke with the White House this morning after another horrific shooting by federal agents. This has happened in Minnesota. It’s disgusting. The President must end this operation. Get thousands of violent, untrained police officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
Massachusetts Senate candidate Seth Moulton insists ICE agents should be prosecuted. “You are all cowards,” he wrote on the
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries suggested the same thing. “Masked and lawless DHS agents brutally murdered another American citizen in Minneapolis,” he wrote on social media. “Donald Trump’s extremists unleashed this carnage on America’s streets. They must all be held criminally accountable to the full extent of the law.”
Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jamie was shot to death in the 2018 Parkland High School shooting, said the former US president could have an impact. “Just a thought from @JoeBiden, @BarackObama, @BillClinton and George Bush, but today will be a great day for all living former presidents to come together to Minnesota and help defend democracy,” he wrote.
Megyn Kelly suggested a different course of action for the agency and Donald Trump, though she still found a distasteful way to do so. The president “should today pull ICE out of Minnesota and announce that there will be no more immigration enforcement in Minnesota. Encourage all immigrants in the U.S. illegally to move there,” she wrote on social media. “If illegal immigrants are found outside of Minnesota and deported, they will never be able to apply for re-entry.”
Others drew attention to the actions of local agents.
“The actions of these agents were appalling. Clearly untrained,” Chuck Todd wrote, before quoting an Associated Press article. “After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered and shouted insults at federal officers, calling them ‘cowards’ and telling them to go home. One officer mockingly responded as he walked away, telling them: ‘Shhh.'” Agents elsewhere pushed a yelling protester into a car. “
“So the ‘everyone should be armed’ Second Amendment crowd is using the fact that a person (maybe) is armed as justification?” asked CNN’s Adam Kinzinger. “Is this right?”
Sarah Longwell, founder and publisher of Bulwark, reported that ICE agents were not cooperating with local authorities in Minneapolis. “Turn on the TV and watch the latest developments. I can’t believe it. DHS/ICE is not cooperating with local law enforcement. They seem very unhappy about this. They have to work from the video like the rest of us.”
