Jeffrey Epstein once claimed billionaire businessman and philanthropist Bill Gates had sex outside of marriage, according to an email released by the Justice Department on Friday.

Epstein made the claim in a 225-word email to himself on July 18, 2013, with the subject line: “Bill.”

He wrote that as a colleague of Gates, he was asked to do things that “may have crossed the line into illegality.” He added that Gates and his then-wife Melinda Gates were involved in “serious marital disputes” and that he helped facilitate the billionaire’s “illegal trysts.”

The couple announced their divorce in May 2021. That same year, Gates told PBS News that he had dinner with Epstein in hopes of raising money for global health. He described the meeting as “a mistake”.

The newly released emails are among more than 3 million documents released by the Justice Department on Friday to comply with the Epstein Documents Transparency Act, which was signed into law in November.

The newly released documents include thousands of emails, court documents and photos, many of which name prominent figures such as President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Elon Musk. Being named in a document does not in itself constitute evidence of wrongdoing.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Branch said the massive data dump complied with federal law and “marked the end of a very comprehensive” review process.
