James ‘seems to slot into Chelsea’s midfield seamlessly’

BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club panel has heaped praise on Reece James, who performed “sensibly” in Chelsea’s midfield against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Chelsea captain, who usually plays as a right-back, has been pushed into a more advanced position at times.

“James has always been a fantastic player but he has struggled with injuries,” former Premier League forward Chris Sutton said. “That has been his Achilles’ heel in recent seasons.

“But what he’s showing now is his versatility, being able to play different roles and being able to play those roles well.

“It shows what a good player he’s been and this is just about getting him playing time.”

The Observer’s Rory Smith added: “It’s hard not to feel sorry for him as he has lost most of his career to injury.

“Although he has always been a specialist full-back, he seems to have integrated seamlessly into the midfield.”
