Applying for a driving license? You can get driving license in India through offline and online methods. However, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, an online process seems to be the most logical way forward at the moment. It also makes things easier as you don’t have to queue or go to a government office in person to start the application process. Driving licenses in India are issued by state governments. Many states in the country have prepared online processes. The central government also recently created the Parivahan Sarathi portal to help citizens easily apply for driving license online.

How to apply for a driving license online
Before starting with the steps required to apply for a driving license online, it is important to note that you will need to have a learner’s driving license beforehand.

You will now be given instructions on the various stages you need to go through to apply for a driving license.

Enter your mobile number to generate a one-time password (OTP).

Now, enter the OTP you received on your phone number and click on Authenticate with Sarathi.

If you already have a learner’s permit, select the Hold learner’s permit option and enter its number and your date of birth. If you qualify, you can choose to hold a foreign DL or hold a defense license option.

Now, fill up the application form and select the dates on which you can visit the nearby Road Transport Office (RTO).
You must now go to the nearby RTO on the scheduled date with the original documents and charge slip. The RTO will also provide you with a seat to appear for the driving test. You will receive your license within two to three weeks of passing the exam. It is strongly recommended to wear protective masks and maintain social distancing norms while visiting RTOs.
