Warner Bros. has reportedly canceled expansion plans for its most popular game in recent years, Hogwarts Legacy, as part of a restructuring of its gaming division. A new report from Bloomberg claims that the DLC is targeted for release in 2025 and will add story content to the action-adventure game. Warner Bros., which lost $300 million (roughly Rs. 2,564 crore) on its big bet for 2024, has significantly scaled back its gaming unit this year, closing three studios and canceling projects.
Hogwarts Legacy DLC canceled
The Hogwarts Legacy expansion is scheduled to launch later this year alongside the game’s “definitive edition,” which will bundle all of the game’s released content, according to a report released Thursday. While the company has not officially announced plans for the DLC, sources familiar with the matter said Warner Bros. canceled the project this week.
According to sources, the company is concerned that the Hogwarts Legacy expansion pack doesn’t have enough content to justify the pricing. “Hogwarts Legacy” developer Avalanche Software is working with Rocksteady Studios, which released “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” in 2024, to develop DLC. While details about the planned expansion are unclear, it will reportedly focus on a companion storyline that was cut from the main game.
“Hogwarts Legacy” has been a huge success for Warner Bros., having sold more than 34 million copies since its launch in 2023. Avalanche is developing a sequel to the game, which remains one of Warner Bros. Gaming’s top priorities.
Since the game’s launch, sales of subsequent WB releases have fallen short of expectations. Big-budget live shooter Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed to attract players and led to layoffs at Rocksteady. The cyber shooting incident caused a loss of $200 million (approximately Rs. 1,751 crore) to the company. Rocksteady originally planned to support Suicide Squad with regular content updates, but the studio announced in December 2024 that the game would receive a final update in January.
Warner Bros. lost a further $100 million (approximately Rs. 854 crore) on Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and MultiVersus, two games due to be launched in 2024. WB Games announced in January that it would end development of MultiVersus and take the game offline on May 30.
Last month, Warner Bros. closed three studios and canceled development of its troubled Wonder Woman franchise. The shuttered studios include Middle-earth: Shadow of War developer Monolith Productions, MultiVersus developer Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego, which is reportedly working on a Mario Kart-like racing game with Warner Bros. IP.
