Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko had a great Wednesday as all of his 2026 commits signed letters of intent to play for the Aggies next season and beyond during the annual Early Signing Day. Taking a quick look at the program’s future roster, led by five-star cornerback Brandon Arrrington, the Aggies are well-equipped to compete in the CFP again in 2026 in addition to future transfer portal additions.
Hours after the class signed, sealed and delivered, Mike Elko took questions from the media and gave his first reaction to Texas A&M, which dropped four spots in Tuesday’s latest college football rankings to No. 7 and is now expected to play a first-round rematch with No. 10 Notre Dame on Dec. 19 or 20.

After DKR lost on the road to No. 13 Texas (9-3, 6-3 SEC), the CFP Selection Committee determined that Ole Miss (No. 6), Oregon (No. 5) and Texas Tech (No. 4) all had better resumes despite being ranked higher than the Aggies based on strength of schedule and record. None of this makes any sense, and many, including myself, believe the committee bases these rankings on recent results.
Yes, losing on the road just weeks before a CFP game is a bad moment, but even Elko was confused and asked for clarification on the way forward.
“As a football coach, put the ball down, let’s go play… We’re going to be in the playoffs, we’re going to compete for a national championship. From a CEO perspective, we’re all screaming for clarification. What exactly are our tie-breaker criteria?”
Texas A&M has yet to play Mississippi State this season. Little was given to the committee considering Texas A&M’s 4-1 road record after Lane Kiffin left his longtime job with the Rebels and took over at LSU, including blowout wins over LSU and Missouri.
Elko and his staff aren’t going to sit back and wait and watch this weekend’s Championship Weekend lineup, as I reported earlier today, if Alabama beats Georgia in the SEC Championship Game plus BYU beats Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship Game, the Aggies could drop in the rankings and potentially miss hosting a first-round game, but I’m hoping Georgia and Tech can take care of their business.
