Google Chrome is one of the widely used browsers and one of the reasons for its adoption could be due to the availability of extensions, which are accessible in the Chrome Web Store. However, with around 140,000 extensions available in the pool, users often face the problem of finding quality and secure extensions. To address this issue and help users search for the highest quality extensions, Google has launched two new badges – the Featured Badge and the Notable Publisher Badge. These badges are designed to cut through clutter and provide Chrome users with great extensions.
Google announced the launch of the two badges in a blog post and also mentioned that the badges are now available in the Chrome Web Store. Interestingly, publishers will not be able to purchase these badges through monetary transactions. Developers need to submit a request for review of their extension to receive the featured badge.
Requests can be made on the one-stop support page. Interested publishers can read more about badges in the Chrome App Store.
Let’s take a look at the new badges introduced by Google:
Featured Badges
Chrome will award Featured badges to extensions that have been manually evaluated by Chrome team members against some guidelines. The badge is awarded to extensions that strictly adhere to Chrome Web Store guidelines, including applying the latest platform APIs and respecting user privacy. Other criteria for earning the badge include the extension’s store listing page, providing a clear interface to users, with high-quality images and detailed information. Through these mandatory checks, Google aims to respect the privacy and security of users while browsing the search engine.
Established publisher badge
The new badge has been extended to verified developers who adhere to developer program policies. Publishers also need to provide a history of good performance on Google services to earn the badge. Developers can verify it here.
