Germany’s foreign ministry has summoned Iran’s ambassador in response to Tehran’s attacks on Israel and other countries in the Middle East.
“We unequivocally call on the Iranian regime to immediately cease its reckless attacks on countries in the region,” the ministry said on Tuesday.
“We condemn the Iranian regime’s indiscriminate and disproportionate missile and drone attacks, including those targeting civilian targets,” the statement continued. “These attacks threaten our allies, military personnel and nationals in the region.”
Tehran launched attacks on U.S. bases in Israel and several Gulf states after the United States and Israel launched a major offensive on Saturday.
Fighting in the region escalated, with Israel bombing Beirut on Tuesday in response to attacks by Iran-affiliated Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.
The Iranian embassy said Ambassador Majid Neely told the German Foreign Ministry that the U.S. and Israeli attacks violated international law.
He mentioned that Article 51 of the United Nations Charter provides for the right of self-defense.
“Iran’s actions fall within the scope of the legitimate right of self-defense,” the embassy quoted him as saying.
