WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) – German Foreign Minister John Wadfel said on Tuesday that there were more commonalities than differences with the United States.

“I have really regained my composure, but also feel that it will be good to have close communication in the future,” he said before returning to Berlin after two days of meetings in the United States.

Wadfel’s comments come as Washington becomes increasingly nervous over its targeting of Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark that U.S. President Donald Trump has said is vital to U.S. security.

Wadfel reiterated that Greenland and Denmark should decide the island’s future.

“The issue of territorial sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark will be decided by Denmark and not others,” he said.

The standoff in Greenland has heightened European concerns about the future of the NATO alliance and the transatlantic relationship, but Wadfel said almost all interlocutors had said they wanted to attend the Munich Security Conference in February.

“This shows that the United States has a broad interest across party lines in building close ties with Germany and Europe,” Wadfil said.
