They also announced that Kliff Kingsbury will serve as McVay’s assistant head coach. It was previously reported that Kingsbury would join McVay’s staff, but his role was unclear.
Kingsbury, a former head coach at Texas Tech and the Arizona Cardinals, spent the past two seasons as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator. The Commander parted ways with Kingsbury this offseason, and he will now serve as McVay’s top assistant.
Former Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, who served as Kingsbury’s passing game coordinator, will also join the team as a senior offensive assistant.
Woods returns to Rams just days after announcing retirement
Woods, meanwhile, will begin his coaching career with the Rams, where he played for five of his 12 NFL seasons. Woods played for the Rams from 2017-21, all under McVay. He ended his final season in Los Angeles on injured reserve with a torn ACL, but was a member of the 2021 Super Bowl championship team.

Woods joined the Rams staff less than a week after retiring. Woods spent the final two seasons of his career with the Houston Texans in 2023-24. He joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2025 offseason, but did not play in 2025 after the Steelers waived him in August.
Woods played for four NFL teams but announced his retirement with an Instagram statement in Rams blue and gold and a prominent image of him wearing a Rams uniform. The Rams later announced his official retirement as a member of the team.
Less than a week later, Woods officially rejoined the team as a member of the coaching staff.

He rejoins a Rams team that lost to the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game and is expected to be one of the top Super Bowl contenders next season. He will work directly with two of the top receivers in football, Puka Nakua and Davante Adams.
